rugged rolling carry-on

Sport/fashion branded carry-on's don't perform well on a bombed runway in Afghanistan loaded with contractor's supplies, or a cobble-stone street pulling news-camera gear. This model is the 4x4, heavy-truck equivalent to their station-wagon. And you won't look like a fashion victim standing amongst the pros when you arrive with this feature-loaded partner by your side.

Great bag. Well made. Lots of extras. A heavy weight bag, that when fully loaded, might be difficult for a some to put in the over head bin. (Posted on 3/4/2016)

Absolutely love this bag. I've put this through hell, and it's been through scores of domestic and international ports. I regularly use the laptop sleeve, and if I'm checking it I'll keep the dopt kit and other quick-need items in there so I don't have to open up the main compartment in the airport.

Only downside is if it's completely full it may fall forward when a satchel is in top. (Posted on 3/1/2016)

Brought this on 4 trips so far. Loving the rugged wheels. They tackled the remnants of snow and ice (and street salt) wonderfully. Side pocket is perfect for easy access carry on liquids bag. Handle is rugged and moves smoothly, with two stopping points along its extending path for different heights. I'm quite happy with my purchase.

Only two complaints, neither of them major...

1) I don't use the laptop pocket, and it really digs into the usable internal space. I have a separate carry on bag for my laptop (that I keep with me on flights, vs this bag which I stuff in the overhead bins). I choose to mitigate this by stuffing my socks in there, but i still wish it wasn't there.

2) 4 trips * 2 flights each way = 8 flights with this bag so far. On two of those flights, this bag exceeded the size of the overhead bin (when slid in depthwise). I can make it fit by turning it lengthwise, but that's kind of a rude thing to do on a crowded flight. Checking at the gate isn't the end of the world, and I don't necessarily wish it was smaller, but its frustrating that I never really know if it will fit in the overhead properly or not. Excellent product. The padded compartment causes some packing issues but it's quite useful in protecting electronics. The wheels are very durable and the handles are in convenient locations. I recommend this carry on to anyone that needs durable luggage. (Posted on 3/1/2016)

The bag is heavy duty and well constructed. It is easy to roll on the large, heavy duty wheels, but still fit nicely into overhead compartment. Great bag. (Posted on 3/1/2016)
Lots of Vinyl In Place of Cordura, Not Up To The Build Quality of Other BrandsReview by Bruce P

To give you some background on my perspective on this item, I am a professional speaker and CEO, and buy the toughest travel equipment because I use it so frequently. I also have a Maxpedition "Gear Tactical Rolling Carry-On" and a large 5.11 "CAMS (1.0) Tactical Roller". My laptop is a Panasonic "Fully Rugged" unit that can be dropped from 6 feet and hosed with water, and keep running. I beat a $450 Briggs and Reilly bag to death with my normal use, and will get to try their "lifetime" service. Not a cop, firefighter, or soldier but I need tough equipment that doesn't fail in heavy use.

So, I bought this because the Maxpedition roller is smaller and won't max out the allowed bin space on flights the way this one will. The Hazard 4 bag is a lot less expensive than the other brands, and thus it's not really fair to expect as much of it as one might of a Maxpedition equivalent.

But it was still disconcerting to see so much vinyl in this bag. Soft vinyl. PVC. Polyvinyl Chloride. Ugh.

At least 30% of the outer surfaces of this bag are vinyl. Most of the top. At least half of the long sides. Half of the back. The entirety of the outer organizer pocket on the side. But only about 5% of the front, which I guess is all that many people look at.

Other than the vinyl, this bag is well made! Nice stitching, good strap and velcro work, etc. But all of that vinyl says "fake" to me. Not really as tough as it says it is. Made for poseurs who want to look cool but won't wear it as hard as a Maxpedition, 5.11, or Briggs and Reilly. In need of a 2.0 version without the vinyl, even at a higher price point.

There is a "Cordura" brand tag, which means that the branded Cordura by Invista (owned by the Koch brothers, who I guess bought it from DuPont) was used rather than the unbranded "ballistic nylon" used by Maxpedition. Cordura is softer to handle and quieter in motion than the plain "ballistic nylon" because Cordura has more fibers per strand (basic ballistic nylon might only have one). But I like the toughness of the basic ballistic nylon better. It's not so noisy or abrasive that it matters, and it's worn really well. And just as an aside, I'd walk a mile to avoid giving more money to the Koch brothers. So the other brands win this one too.

So, all in all a bit of a disappointment, but perhaps still a good value. I'll put it to some use and see if that vinyl gets holes in it. (Posted on 3/1/2016)
Not for the Casual -- Zombie Apocolypse Ready and AbleReview by A.C.

Road warrior field service and this bag holds up. BE AWARE that the screws in the sides of the handle (phillips) and the front an back of the telescoping rods (T8 torx) will loosen over hard-use time and will need 30 seconds of "tune up" with the proper tools. I may resort to Loctite threadlocker at some point, but it doesn't happen that often ... twice last year over 70k miles.

Also although it does fit overhead on mid size birds (eg United A300) wheels first, it gives the impression to some FA that the handle sticks out too far and the bin lid won't close. It does just fine with slight added effort.

The "locks" on the plastic compression strap buckles are a bit fiddly. I may remove them for convenience. There's no way the buckles once snapped in will pop loose... the little slide lock latches are redundant and slow you down IMO.

The electronics pouch area gets in the way and is a bit of a pain, EXCEPT when you need it. From my seat I witnessed my bag falling from the top of the loading conveyor, and hitting the ground face first on the pouch area where my otherwise naked tablet was. I was sure it would be toast, or at least a cracked screen. Later discovered not a scratch. Random empirical event, but in my mind the price of this well-made and executed gear was offset by saving my tablet.

Also be aware that I had a lot of Molle plans for the front and side, but this will put you over the MLC limit and not be able to fit in the "test stand" without some serious squeezing. Even with out Molle add-ons, if you overpack this bag it will exceed MLC. I've never been forced to gate check, but several times I was challenged to "make it fit or else" ... which I did with some effort, anger, and attitude. This bag demands careful packing to avoid FA confrontations, but rewards you with cavernous capacity still under MLC, but with awesome durability, protection, and a nice roller system.

Great Carry-OnReview by BG

I debated on ordering this for a couple months; I did not need a new carry-on but I wanted to replace my Samsonite with a carry-on that was a little bit smaller and this is perfect (the Samsonite was to deep to get it into overhead compartments very easily). This carry-on feels like a Bugout bag was converted to a more ridged frame carry-on. The material is good, and it doesn't feel as rough on the outside as my Bugout bag. The inside material is soft and slightly padded; not enough to take up much room but enough to notice. The compression straps and molle on the outside feel very sturdy, and I expect they'll hold up well overtime. The wheels are thick and should handle any surface they roll over without damaging them.

The only con I have is more of an inconvenience; and that is the laptop pad. It is well constructed and works great, but I don't use it to store my laptap when I travel so it just takes up extra room. I rolled it up inside and it's out of the way, but there's a little extra space taken up inside the bag that could be used for clothes or gear.

Everything on this pack feels strong and well built, and I don't see myself having any troubles with this carry-on. I am glad I bought this carry-on, and I wouldn't hesitate to buy it again. (Posted on 3/1/2016)
